The Superhero Psyche

Ok, everyone expects me to talk only about Batman and how he is superior. Despite the truth of the matter, I would like to delve into a few reasons why Superman is a decent hero as well, and do a little side by side comparison. The first element of the superhero of course is their cause; the reason they become a vigilante. Lets agree for the most part, a superhero is above the law in the food chain. A cop can be a hero, but to be a superhero you must take the law into your own hands. Anyway, their cause. Each hero has a different event driving them to protect the innocent, etc. What sets Superman apart from many heroes is he chooses to be good through the goodness of his own heart. Hell, this isn't his planet, or his people. He was raised lovingly, that may have to do with it, but he made a conscious decision to do good. On the other side, Batman is driven by the memory of his parents murder. It takes him quite some time to accept and understand how he can make a difference, and as he grows he travels the world to train under many of the finest martial arts masters. This is one of the reasons I like Batman, he had to put forth effort into becoming Batman. It meant training and sacrifice. Especially sacrificing his life as a bachelor; most of his girl interests are turned away by the mantle of the bat, while Superman winds up getting married to his main love interest. This could never work for Batman, who has a lot of inner turmoil and depths of emotion that are just more complex than Superman. In all fairness, Superman would win in an all out fist fight. He's stronger physically. But if this was an actual fight between them, Batman would definitely win. He is in essence a detective (Just think what Ra's Al Ghul calls him), who would easily discover Superman's weakness and exploit it. While many superheroes have solid weakness' (Superman and Kryptonite is the best example), Batman's only weakness is his mortality. Also I feel like Batman is just a more real character. Not real in the sense that one day some man will run through the streets of New York dressed as a bat, although this has probably already happened. I mean, he is a character we can identify with. Not many people lost their parents because their planet blew up. But many people have felt loss and the hopelessness it creates. In some of us, it inspires the lust for justice. And that is how superheroes are born. I don't think superpowers makes the hero. Seriously just look at the invisible girl from the fantastic four. She has more super powers than Batman, but man, what a god awful hero.
